Significance & Religious Importance

The Day of Ashura is observed on the 10th of Muharram. It holds deep religious and historical significance in Islam. It is the day on which Allah delivered Prophet Musa (Moses, A.S) and Bani Israel from the tyranny of Pharaoh by parting the Red Sea. Muslims observe Sunnah fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. It is also solemnized across the Muslim world in loving memory of the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and his loyal companions at Karbala.

Recommended Sunnah Deeds & Practices

  • Fast on the 10th of Muharram (Ashura) along with the 9th (Tasu’a) as encouraged by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
  • Fasting on Ashura expiates the sins of the previous year (Sahih Muslim)
  • Spend generously on one’s family and dependents on this day
  • Reflect on the noble virtues of steadfastness, sacrifice, and standing firm for justice
Masnoon Dua / Supplication
Sufficient for us is Allah, and He is the best Disposer of affairs; what an excellent Protector and what an excellent Helper!
