Significance & Religious Importance
The Islamic New Year (Hijri New Year) marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar on the 1st of Muharram. Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam (Ashhur al-Hurum). The calendar was established during the Caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab (R.A), commemorating the historic Hijrah (migration) of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE.
Recommended Sunnah Deeds & Practices
- Observe non-obligatory voluntary fasting during Muharram (the best fasting after Ramadan)
- Engage in sincere self-reflection (Muhasabah) and renew intentions for spiritual growth
- Make abundant Istighfar (repentance) and supplications for peace and unity in the Ummah
- Treat family with kindness and give voluntary Sadaqah (charity)
Masnoon Dua / Supplication
Allahumma adkhilhu alayna bil-amni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-Islam, wa jiwarin minash-shaytan, wa ridwanin minar-Rahman
O Allah, bring this [new year/month] upon us with peace, faith, safety, Islam, protection from Shaytan, and pleasure from the Most Merciful.
